Background

The Galesburg Public Art Commission was formed to create opportunities and venues for art to impact the cultural identity of the community.

The initial seeds of the Galesburg Public Art Commission were planted when Galesburg native and artist, Lonnie Stewart, shared with his friends, Peter and Judy Gorham, the idea of a large sculpture of Carl Sandburg in Galesburg’s Central Park.

The commission was formed when a group of local business leaders came together to revisit the sculpture idea in the spring of 2010.

The Galesburg Public Art Commission was formed later that year and the Carl Sandburg sculpture in Central Park was chosen as the Commission’s first Project.
