Carl Sandburg Statue

Carl Sandburg Statue

The Galesburg Public Art Commission has chosen a memorial to American literary legend and distinctive native son, Carl Sandburg. Lonnie Stewart created a standing figure of Sandburg, books in hand and guitar slung over his back. Beside him is a Nubian goat, a reminder of Sandburg’s love of rural farm life.

The cast bronze statue is nine feet tall and mounted on a six-foot tall base in Central Park. Central Park will be landscaped with plantings native to Illinois, creating an inviting atmosphere. A new pedestrian promenade and mounted Sandburg quotations are around the perimeter of the monument. Accent lighting, illuminating the memorial and surrounding landscape, complete the project.
